Never forget—these two words hold such power and emotion when thinking of that tragic Tuesday morning 13 years ago. Every year, regardless of the day’s hectic bustle, it’s important to take a moment to come together as a community in memory of all those heroes lost on September 11, 2001.
This year, to honor the victims and service men and women who lost their lives in efforts to save their fellow Americans, strong and proud New Yorkers of Westchester County have planned a jam-packed day of giving back. Whether volunteering at a local food drive, donating blood or simply attending a memorial service, there are numerous ways to pay tribute to our beloved country and the fallen men and women of 9/11.
Here are just a few ways you can help Westchester County give back with its day of service and remembrance.
Volunteer New York! will host multiple community service opportunities at Westchester County Center including a food, lamp and diaper drive. New this year will be the launch of the Westchester County Diaper Bank in partnership with the Junior League of Central Westchester. People are encouraged to donate to this new local cause, which strives to provide clean diapers to Westchester families that struggle financially. The Diaper Bank is expected to begin operation later this year.
Many additional projects and programs will also be available such as The Literacy Project, Postcard Project, as well as multiple volunteer opportunities in the community including trail maintenance at the Rye Nature Center, sorting and packaging back to school clothing for local children in need, and fence building and painting along the Hudson River. There will also be a mentoring and tutoring fair available throughout the day on the second floor of the County Center. These are just a few of the activities planned for Westchester County’s day of service and remembrance. Additional days of service projects run through September 14th. Join community members today in their eagerness and willingness to help out neighbors and honor their fellow Americans.
There will also be an opportunity to donate blood in memory of those passed. The need for blood donations is always high, and all eligible individuals are encouraged to contribute to the Marylou Seaman Employee Blood Drive in partnership with the New York Blood Center as part of its September 11th observance. Close the day’s selfless events with a tribute to the fallen heroes of September 11th in Westchester County’s formal 9/11 memorial ceremony located at The Rising at Kensico Dam. The service begins at 7PM, and all are invited to gather in remembrance, love and support for the men and women of Westchester County and beyond, lost on this tragic day.
