The Leatherstocking Trail: A Scenic Escape in Westchester County

Stretching nearly two miles long on approximately 30 acres of land, the Leatherstocking Trail provides avid walkers, runners and nature enthusiasts with a beautiful respite from the typical day-to-day in Westchester County. The well-preserved paths cross through Mamaroneck, N.Y.’s town center, stretching east from New Rochelle to the Village of Mamaroneck, and can be accessed by several residential streets. “Owning a home near this beloved hidden treasure is a definite bonus,” comments Larchmont agent Jane Murray, who has listed and sold a number of homes intersecting the trail. “One of my clients runs on Leatherstocking Trail every day with her dog, enjoying the scenic route and peaceful surroundings.”

Originally set to be a parkway in 1926, the undeveloped stretch of land, formerly known as the County Bridle Trail, was salvaged by local activists and groups after the IMG_8943establishment of the New England Thruway (I-95). With no need for another parkway, dedicated citizens and town officials saved the acreage, eventually developing it into trails for passive recreation.

Now home to various species of birds, flowers, vines and trees including oak, maple, ash, sweetgum and more, the Leatherstocking Trail is the perfect place to appreciate the region’s natural beauty and wonder. There is even a tree nursery on the eastern end, and numerous boardwalks and bodies of water throughout add to its splendid views and offerings.

There’s no better time to explore this natural haven than during the peak of fall foliage season! Here are a few current properties that benefit from their close proximity to the trail, which Murray describes as a “beautiful neighborhood attribute that’s not to be missed.”
