Terrie Henry did not know what to expect when her husband, Larry, purchased a historic Tudor home in Harrison, N.Y., 30 years ago. She was pregnant at the time, and unable to visit the property, bestowing her wholehearted trust upon her husband to make the final decision. When it came time for Terrie to see the chosen abode, a residence that would, in fact, mold the very essence of her family’s future, she couldn’t have been more delighted. “I was immediately struck by the light pouring through the tremendously large windows and high ceilings of this beautiful Tudor home,” comments Terrie. “Our move-in day was dreary and cold, yet it didn’t feel oppressive at all, only welcoming and warm.” And so began the Henry family’s love affair with 27 Archer Road, a one-of-a-kind residence in the highly sought-after neighborhood of Sterling Ridge.
Built in 1931, this magnificent home, which is now for sale and offered at $2,690,000, resides on over an acre of land, boasting exceptional curb appeal and lush lawns. The five-bedroom, four full and three half-bath residence has been expanded and renovated to offer today’s luxuries and conveniences while maintaining several features of its past. “We completed all renovations in stages, the kitchen being our first major task.” Originally seven separate rooms, the area was transformed into a state-of-the-art modern space, with innovative storage features as well as an added family room and bar for entertaining. A bedroom was also placed above a brand-new garage, now conveniently attached to the house. The home’s most recent updates include three upstairs bathrooms, which offer the finest quality and chic design.
In addition to exquisite finishes and details throughout, the solidly built residence boasts thick plaster walls, as well as magnificent stone, which greatly reduces sound, adding to an already peaceful atmosphere. “This house has such character and charisma,” comments Rye agent Christy Murphy, who represents this beloved property. “It is an extraordinary home in the most beautiful, quiet setting of the Sterling Ridge Estate area. Between its stunning gardens, professionally landscaped, one-acre level yard that is perfect for all activities, and its great attention to interior details, the property truly has it all.” The Sterling Ridge community contains a zoning requirement of at least one acre per lot, resulting in a pristine neighborhood with no traffic and a scene Terrie describes as simply lovely. “Deep roots live here, from its old plantings and ancient trees to its consistent residents, who choose to make Sterling Ridge their home for many years. People who come here tend to stay.”
Harrison, N.Y., is also conveniently located, offering a short commute to New York City, as well as an abundance of activities closer to home including skiing, horseback riding, hiking and more. The town additionally contains top-ranked school systems, making the already desirable area an even more appealing place to live. The inhabitants, too, who make up this tight-knit Westchester County neighborhood contribute to its residential longevity. “Children throughout the neighborhood would join my kids on the front lawn, playing games for hours on end,” Terrie says. “Their laughter would make everyone smile. Parents would walk over and join in on the fun, and we’d all catch up.”
As the years went on, the Henrys’ circle of friends grew, and they began to frequently entertain on a larger scale, hosting as many as 300 people at a time. Terrie and Larry organized a Thanksgiving pie fest, countless birthday parties, “Summer Olympiads” for the kids and a “Winter Wonderland” gathering during the holiday season. “Every other year we removed the furniture from the living room and built a snow village that filled the entire room,” Terrie fondly recounts. “There were hundreds of guests invited, yet the house never felt overly crowded thanks to its incredible entertaining spaces and amenities. The kids would be downstairs in the finished lower level, the adults upstairs, and everyone was just filled with joy.” The same joy, in fact, that grew within the walls of 27 Archer Road for Terrie, her husband and kids each and every day for the past three decades.
“One neighbor still says that when he drives by our house, he is always reminded of the countless times he saw Larry and the kids on the front lawn playing ball. It was where our children learned how to pitch, play croquet and volleyball, and where they practiced their golf swings. It is where they all grew up, and for that I am so deeply grateful.”
Although bittersweet, it is now time for the next lucky residents to make their own lifetime of memories on the property. “27 Archer Road will always hold a special place in our hearts,” comments Terrie. “It will forever be my favorite home.”
