The town of Hatfield, In Hampshire County, Mass., is a former farming community encompassing 15.9 square miles on the west bank of the Connecticut River at the mouth of the Mill River.

Situated about 25 miles north of Springfield, Hatfield was the birthplace and hometown of Sophia Smith, the founder of Smith College in nearby Hampton, as well as Smith Academy, the public high school in Hatfield.

The community, which has a population of approximately 3,300 residents within 1,381 households, comprises several lovely villages, including the village of Hatfield as well as Westbrook, North Hatfield and Bradstreet near its northern border. West Hatfield is situated near the Northampton border.

Hatfield’s major transportation routes include U.S. Route 5, Route 10 and Interstate 91, which traverse through town. The town’s public school system comprises the high school, Smith Academy, serving grades 7 through 12, and an elementary school which ranges from grades pre-K to 6.

History runs deep in Hatfield, and the community takes pride in the Mill-Prospect Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020 and encompassing a historic landscape representing more than 300 years of agriculture and industrial history.
