The town of Greenport, in beautiful Columbia County, N.Y., offers a small-town atmosphere yet lively social atmosphere within its 20.5 square miles.

The last town founded in the county, Greenport was established in 1837 from a portion of the city of Hudson and at one time was a part of the town of Claverack.

Home to about 2,600 residents, scenic Greenport lies on the west border of Columbia County and surrounds Hudson on three sides. Residents enjoy the area’s unspoiled, natural beauty, as well as its plethora of beaches, historic homes, eateries and shops. A bridge in town connects Greenport to the Village of Catskill.

One of Greenport’s most notable residents was Frederic Edwin Church, and his former home is now the Olana State Historic Site. Another source of historic pride among residents is Rogers Island, an island in the Hudson River in the southwest part of town which was the site of an epic battle in the a war between the Mohican and Mohawk Tribes for control of the river’s beaver trade with the Dutch.
