The town comprises the village of Philmont in the northeast part of town, Red Mills, a site east of Claverack village and the hamlets of Brick Tavern, Churchtown, Claverack, Hollowville, Martindale, Mellenville and Upper Hollowville.

Residents enjoy easy access to Albany, Boston and New York City. The Taconic State Parkway traverses north to south through the town’s eastern portion.
