Early in its settlement, the town of Ancram in Columbia County, home to approximately 1,500 residents, was known by several different names. It was originally called Livingston Forge after the development of a local iron foundry there, and in the late 18th century, the town was often referred to as Scotchtown as a result of immigrants of Scottish ancestry who located there. Ancram is historically known for its mining of iron and lead and as a major producer of cannonballs and shot at the dawn of the Revolution. A large chain known as the Fort Montgomery Chain, was produced at the Ancram foundry in 1776 and installed across the Hudson River near West Point to hinder British ships. The town comprises several small rural hamlets, including Ancram in the western portion of town, Ancramdale, situated southeast of Ancram village, and Boston Corner, adjacent to the Massachusetts border. In Ancram’s northeast section lies a portion of Taconic State Park, and by the north town line Weed Mines is located. A popular historic landmark in the center of Ancram is the circa 1873 Simons General Store.
