The town of Chatham is a located on the northern border of Columbia County. It is comprised of the Village of Chatham and the hamlets of Chatham Center, East Chatham, North Chatham, Old Chatham. Chatham was settle by the Dutch in the 1700’s and was an industrial center for interstate rail lines in the early 1900s. Land Conservation is strong and Chatham has several areas open to the public: Borden’s Pond (62 Acres), Ooms Conservation Area (180 acres), Wilson M. Powell Wildlife Sanctuary (145 Acres), Freund Wildlife Sanctuary (57 Acres). The Old Chatham Sheepherding Company, opened in 1993, makes award winning cheeses and yogurts. It is about a 2-hour drive from Manhattan.
