Comprising a total of 12.8 square miles, the town of Clarksburg, settled in 1769, is a paradise of natural beauty and resources. On the Vermont side of it border lies the Green Mountain National Forest, and the Appalachian Trail traverses the town from north to south. The highest point in town is East Mountain, at 2,300 feet. Clarksburg is home to the Clarksburg State Park, which offers a variety of recreational opportunities, as well as hiking, camping and picnicking. The latter industry was halted, however, after an explosion at one of the mills in 1869.
