Coffee, Carburetors and Car-Friendly Abodes

Calling all car enthusiasts! We’re getting closer to spring—the time of year when warmer weather and sunlit days mean chances to go out for a drive in that vintage sports car you’ve been dying to unveil. In New Canaan, Conn., this is especially true during “Caffeine & Carburetors,” an automobile and coffee-infused quarterly event set to take place on April 17th.

Car event

Established in 1995 by Doug Zumbach, the owner of “Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee” in New Canaan, this leisurely Sunday morning gathering encompasses beautiful cars, a scenic setting and of course, the perfect, energy-boostingcaffeine fix. Automotive aficionados meet at the charming shop to kick-start this special day of cars, trucks and motorcycles amidst aromas of delicious dark roasts and feelings of great community pride. The event focuses mainly on foreign sports cars, but all kinds are welcome, and encouraged to participate.

“What started as a casual get-together has now morphed into a major New Canaan tradition,” explains Leslie Razook, an agent from our firm’s New Canaan brokerage. “With two of the events this year planned to be right downtown, our office will be part of the main action. This is appropriate, given the many wonderful car collector homes our company has listed throughout town.”

Car-friendly homes are becoming rapidly popular as car-collecting hobbies continue to pick up speed. To own a residence with a garage that has ample space is a dream come true for any car fanatic, providing the undeniable opportunity for collection expansion. Having a one-car, two-car or even three-car garage is not sufficient for these three New Canaan properties that bring the meaning of home car storage to the max, starting with Razook’s listing at 360 Greenley Road.

Often referred to as “Cedar Knoll,” this country-style residence was constructed in 1935 for James Clawson Roop, an executive at Pan American Airways, who was also the budget director under President Hoover. The home boasts exceptional architectural details, as well as both historically preserved and new features throughout to create a luxuriously charming environment. Unique to the property is its seven-car, heated garage, which includes five bays, as well as the potential for top quality features and amenities to accommodate any avid collector. In addition to an extensive garage, the 3.6-acre property contains a large swimming pool and full stone terrace overlooking walking trails, as well as a neighboring land trust and pond.

75 Turner Hill Road, a country compound on over seven acres of pristine land, consists of a 1920s renovated and expanded Cape with spectacular amenities including a stunning pool, pool house, carriage house and five-car garage. The home’s interior features additional comforts such as a 1,450-bottle wine cellar, tasting room and mahogany paneled library amid an atmosphere of classic Colonial-style. Two approved subdivided lots and close proximity to New York City offer Turner Hill residents endless possibilities for living the good life with peace, privacy, luxury and of course, cars.

This extraordinary town landmark has a four-car garage plus lift—a perfect automobile accommodation in anticipation of the upcoming “Caffeine & Carburetors” neighborhood event. Originally built in 1761, 263 Oenoke Ridge, a historic Colonial farmhouse, has since been expanded and renovated, seamlessly melding the past and present into one highly appealing residential opportunity. On the beautifully landscaped property, one will pleasantly discover exquisite gardens, lush lawns, a heated pool and an outdoor kitchen, along with the property’s adjacent guest cottage, which originally served as the one-room West School House.
