Around the Region: May 2018

By Tyler R. Morrissey

Each month we will highlight a few events happening in each of the communities William Pitt and Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty serves.

As the calendar flips from April to May, there are plenty of activities to take part in. Below are just a few events to enjoy as we all eagerly await those May flowers.

In lieu of its annual gala, The Rye Arts Center is hosting a benefit concert and party on May 4th from 7-11 p.m. at the Coveleigh Club. This event will be headlined by Latin Grammy Nominee and former New York Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams. Best known for winning four World Series titles in the 1990s, Williams is now following his musical passions. His first album, The Journey Within, was met with both strong critical praise and reached No. 3 on Billboard’s “Contemporary Jazz Chart.” His second album, Moving Forward, featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Jon Secada, Dave Koz and an all-star cast of renowned studio musicians. Funds raised from the event will support The Rye Arts Center’s many outreach programs. Tickets will cost $150-$350 and Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty is a sponsor for this exciting event. For more information, click here.

Fairfield County

We have been dodging some April Showers (and even a few snow showers) this spring, but that means May flowers are on the horizon. May is also the month that we celebrate Mother’s Day and what better way to celebrate Mom than by taking her to see beautiful Dogwood blossoms. On May 11-13 the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church in Fairfield will host a Dogwood Festival. The weekend-long festival includes over 60 vendors, live music, children’s games, food, raffles and a tag sale. Friday’s event will also include a luncheon at noon. For more information, click here.

Litchfield County

"Classic New England Church; Congregational Church, Litchfield, CT"

Have you ever walked through the center of Litchfield and wondered why there is an abundance of white colored homes and properties? Now is your chance to answer that question and learn more about Litchfield’s past through its historical architecture. The Litchfield History Museum will host a walking tour on May 5th from 10-11 a.m. The walk will cover North and South Streets and the tour will last about an hour. Those interested in this event must pre-register. For more information, click here.

May also marks the time where we pause to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and freedom. On May 28th the Mystic Seaport will pay tribute to fallen Civil War soldiers during its annual Decoration Day ceremony. What we now call Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day when the U.S. government declared it a national day of remembrance in 1868 to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. This year America will mark the 150th anniversary of this federal holiday. In the morning, visitors at the seaport are invited to the museum’s Fishtown Chapel to witness the memorials laid for local Civil War soldiers. Around noon, amid the tolling of steeple bells, all are welcome inside the Greenmanville Church for a brief service complete with a sermon and hymns. A procession to the waterfront will follow. The Berkshires

Spring also represents the return of many types of feathered creatures to the region. The sprawling wooded areas of the Berkshires are some of the best spots to see migrant birds such as wood-warblers, orioles, thrushes and more. Each Friday in May from 7-9 a.m. the Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary in Pittsfield, Mass., will host walks through meadows and woodlands where those in attendance can observe the changes in bird species from week to week. No pre-registration is required and binoculars are encouraged. For more information, click here.
