Around the Region: August 2018

Each month we will highlight a few events happening in each of the communities William Pitt and Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty serves.

As the calendar flips from July to August, there are plenty of activities to take part in. Below are just a few events to enjoy as we enter the final full month of summer.

Westchester County

On Sunday, August 5, the IACAW (Indian American Cultural Association of Westchester), in collaboration with the Westchester County government and Westchester County parks department, brings the exquisite Heritage of India Festival to Valhalla. Enjoy the premiere event of the Asian-Indian community in Westchester and experience the sights, sounds and taste of Indian culture like never before. This is the 19th year that the Heritage of India Festival is being held at the Kensico Dam Plaza, and this year’s theme is Indian musical instruments. In addition to a sampling of Indian cuisine, the festival features artists and dancers, who will showcase their work and dance forms from the various regions of India. Trekking in the night in the moonlight

As the August sun sets and the moon rises through the trees, join Audubon Greenwich for a special evening consisting of a wine and cheese moonlit walk on August 23. Gather in the newly renovated Asnes Barn to enjoy drinks, food and conversation in the setting of the beautiful, historic building. Afterward, go on a guided walk on the Audubon trails to take in the sights and sounds of a moonlit summer evening. While strolling the trails you will listen for hooting owls and look for flying squirrels, tree frogs, katydids, crickets and other creatures of the night. Fresh Peaches

The North Congregational Church of New Hartford is hosting the 22nd annual Peach Fest and Craft Fair in the heart of scenic New Hartford on August 25. Enjoy handcrafted peach products, children’s activities and visiting with artisans and craftspeople. Make the most of your trip and visit one of the local restaurants, vineyards or breweries and enjoy the wild and scenic Farmington River nearby. Hartford County

More than 85 million people around the world have experienced the phenomenon of Disney’s “The Lion King,” and now you can see the show for yourself from August 1-19 at The Bushnell in Hartford. Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this landmark musical event brings together one of the most imaginative creative teams on Broadway. Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor brings to life a story filled with hope and adventure set against an amazing backdrop of stunning visuals. “The Lion King” also features some of Broadway’s most recognizable music, crafted by Tony Award-winning artists Elton John and Tim Rice. For more info and tickets, click here.

The Connecticut Shoreline

Celebrate fine wines from Connecticut wineries and vineyards from all over the state, all offering their products that range from grape wines to fruit wines. Back for its 12th year, the Shoreline Wine Festival will take place on August 11-12 at Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford. Pair the wines with some of the area’s finest foods, with the backdrop setting of a beautiful farm orchard. This two-day festival is a ticketed event that affords you the opportunity to taste the wines from all of the wineries, enjoy a tour of the Bishop’s Orchards Winery and speak with numerous local wine experts. The Berkshires

Meet the artists of Community Access to the Arts (CATA) during their annual art show, entitled “I Am a Part of Art,” on August 2nd at the Clark Art Institute in Great Barrington. The event features a powerful collection of paintings and drawings by artists with disabilities. Works are professionally matted and framed, and all pieces are available for sale, with proceeds providing commissions for individual artists. The exhibits feature a wide range of styles, including abstract and representational paintings and drawings, as well as work in printmaking, sculpture and collage, in a variety of media.
