Harwinton

Harwinton, a former agricultural community, is located in western Litchfield County. The 32-square-mile community was incorporated in 1737 from land controlled by the towns of Hartford and Windsor. The unique town name is a combination of those two towns.

Harwinton offers diverse recreational programs including youth sports, American Legion Baseball and a conservation/recreation area that features hiking trails, tennis courts, volleyball and a fishing pond. Residents take pride in the town’s heritage, with many lovely, historically significant homes dating back to earlier times. An active land trust manages several hundred acres of open space.

The town reflects traditional New England charm. Old stone walls stretch along country roads, and the local historical society has maintained and painstakingly preserved a one-room schoolhouse. The society offers numerous programs and demonstrations about early life in Harwinton, and a collection of artifacts are on display in its barn museum. Some of the products once produced there include cutlery, clocks, bricks, tin ware and pitchforks. The primary sections of Harwinton are Campville and Harwinton Center.
