Situated on the Thames River in New London County, the town of Groton is 45.3 square miles in size and home to about 38,000 residents.

Groton was once a part of neighboring New London until it separated from that community in 1705. Today, it comprises numerous communities including Center Groton, Burnett’s Corner, Groton Long Point, Mystic and Noank, among others. Groton is also home to a U.S. Navy Submarine Base, General Dynamics Electric Boat, the town’s largest employer, and Pfizer pharmaceuticals. The Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut is located in Groton. Among the town’s points of interest are Fort Griswold, Groton Monument, the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Library and Museum, and Morgan Point Light, located in Noank in Groton’s southeastern section.
