The charming rural Columbia County community of Austerlitz comprises hundreds of acres of managed forest land as well as more than 30 miles of trails for passive recreation.

Austerlitz is a rural town bordering Massachusetts with a population under 2000. It was founded in the 1750’s when farming, sheep raising and various mill operations were the economic engines. The mills for lumber, grist and cider production were powered by the many streams running through the town. Steepletop, an 800-acre property was owned by the poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay. A portion of that estate is now the Millay Colony for the Arts. The town in in the process of recreating Old Austerlitz, a village reflecting the lifestyles of the 1830’s with restored houses, gardens and nature trails. Beebe Hill and Harvey Mountain State Forests, totally over 4000 acres, are managed for timber, watershed protection, wildlife habitat and recreation. There are over 30 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, several ponds and streams for paddling and fishing. Spencertown, a hamlet within Austerlitz, is home to the Spencertown Academy Arts Center which hosts an arts program with art exhibits, concerts, readings and lectures. The Blueberry Festival and Autumn in Austerlitz have become popular annual events. The town is located about 130 miles from New York City; 140 from Boston.
