Norfolk

Norfolk’s reputation as a haven for the arts and literature has deep roots. Mark Twain often summered in this bucolic community of approximately 1,600 residents, which in recent years has become a popular summer destination for weekenders from New York City looking to enjoy its scenery, privacy and small-town way of life. The northern Litchfield County town’s natural beauty, as well as the arrival in the 1870s of the Connecticut Western Railroad, contributed to the community’s thriving summer influx.

Norfolk is a haven for writers, artists and music lovers. It is home to the internationally respected Yale Summer School of Music, the circa-1883 Infinity Hall and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. Previous artists-in-residence at the festival have included musicians from Jean Sibelius to the Tokyo String Quartet. There are also myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation like hiking, bird watching and picnicking, as the town is home to three state parks: Campbell Falls State Park, with its 100-foot natural waterfall, Dennis Hill State Park, and Haystack Mountain State Park, which offers trails leading up to its historic tower.
