Washington Irving was a frequent visitor and it is said that he received much inspiration for his Legend of Sleepy Hollow during these stays. They became referred to as O.K. apples. Gradually, O.K. became to be a description of the apples’ good quality. Martin van Buren was known as Old Kinderhook or O.K. During his 1840 election campaign the cry “O.K.” indicated enthusiasm for Old Kinderhook and eventually it became to be understood as a formula of approval.
