Within the boundaries of the town of Mount Pleasant, New York, lie several distinct hamlets and villages, together forming the heartbeat of this affluent Westchester County community. Home to about 45,000 residents and centrally situated within Westchester County, the 32.7-square-mile town contains the villages of Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow and the eastern portion of Briarcliff Manor, as well as the hamlets of Thornwood, Hawthorne, Scarborough, Pocantico Hills, Eastview and Valhalla. Residents, many of whom commute daily via car or rail into New York City, enjoy being situated about 30 miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet living in a community that offers a wealth of local services and a vibrant retail and business environment.

From estates to single-family homes and apartment buildings, Mount Pleasant, which is primarily residential, enjoys a healthy real estate market. The town is also home to several major medical centers, including Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow and the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Those who enjoy the great outdoors will find no shortage of opportunities here. Mount Pleasant’s topography, with its gently rolling hills, pristine watershed areas, myriad parks systems and protected open space, lends itself to a variety of recreational opportunities. The Kensico Reservoir in the eastern part of town is Mount Pleasant’s largest body of water. Both the Pocantico River and Pocantico Lake flow through the community into the mighty Hudson River at the scenic, 18-acre Kingsland Point Park in Sleepy Hollow.

The town’s history runs deep. Mount Pleasant was originally part of the Manor of Philipseburgh. However, the Manor was broken up after the Revolutionary War, following the confiscation and sale of Frederick Philipse’s property. Mount Pleasant was incorporated in 1788 and included the town of Ossining until 1845, when Ossining and Mount Pleasant parted ways.
