Norwich, ‘The Rose of New England’ is a thriving, multi-cultural city on the Thames River in southeastern Connecticut with a rosy outlook for growth.

Founded in 1658 by 69 families from Saybrook, Norwich comprised mainly of farms and businesses before residents constructed a public landing at the head of the Thames River to promote easier trade. The harbor area is known as the Chelsea neighborhood, one of several Norwich neighborhoods which maintain unique identities.

Rapid growth transformed the city into a modern urban center by the early 20th century. Commuters are served by the Norwich Transportation Center, and the main bus depot is located on Holly Hock Island near the downtown area.

The city’s school system blossomed along with its population growth which currently stands at nearly 40,000 and comprises two preschools, seven elementary, two middle schools, three parochial schools, two Montessori schools, a charter school and a regional adult educational program. The Norwich Free Academy serves as one of Norwich’s designated high schools. Three Rivers Community college also serves the region.

Natural resources are in abundance in Norwich, thanks to dedicated conservation and preservation efforts. A prime example is Mohegan Park, a forested area and the city’s largest park with hiking and biking trails, pavilions, basketball courts, a beach, fountain and playgrounds. The park center contains Spaulding Pond, and a stunning rose garden at its Judd Road entrance boasts more than a hundred varieties of roses.
