Pioneer Valley

The Pioneer Valley, comprising the three Massachusetts counties of Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin, is known for its robust economy, unparalleled scenery and as a tourist destination.

The Valley’s upper reaches encompass the cities of Northampton and Greenfield, the county seats of Hampshire and Franklin counties, respectively. The lower Pioneer Valley corresponds to the Springfield, Massachusetts metropolitan area, the region’s urban center and Hampden County’s seat.

The Connecticut River flows through the region, and the spectacular scenery and unspoiled nature surrounds The Holyoke Range, Mount Tom Range, breathtaking bluffs, fertile farmland and rolling hills. The Pioneer Valley is also known for its exceptional homes from the Gilded Age. Tourists and travelers are drawn to the Pioneer Valley’s lively college towns including Amherst and Northampton, as well as popular attractions like New England’s largest amusement park, Six Flags New England in Agawam. Cultural and historic sites also figure prominently in the Valley. The Springfield Armory National Historic Site, the Basketball Hall of Fame on Springfield’s riverfront and the Emily Dickinson House Museum in Amherst are popular with visitors. The Pioneer Valley is also home to numerous professional, amateur and collegiate sports teams.

Recreational opportunities throughout the region are unlimited: ski resorts, seasonal festivals such as the Big E, and the annual Bright Nights at Springfield’s Forest Park. The Valley is also a reader’s paradise: there are several small publishers, countless local authors and independent bookstores in almost every town.
