There’s nothing quite like a bed and breakfast. Typically found in tranquil towns away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a bed and breakfast is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway or a weekend trip in an area of the state you’ve never had the chance to explore before. Most “B&B’s” are located in classic homes with multiple bedrooms to comfortably accommodate guests. Today we take a look at some of the Nutmeg State’s finest properties serving up a great night’s sleep and hearty country breakfast.

988 Saybrook Road – Haddam, Conn.
The Nehemiah Brainerd House, located at 988 Saybrook Road, is an 18th century home that has a reputation as a successful bed and breakfast. The main house and guest house reside in the historic town of Haddam on five acres on a bluff above the Connecticut River. The property is only five minutes from the world-renowned Goodspeed Opera House, a short distance from Gillette Castle State Park and the historic town of Essex. In 2011 it was selected as a “Best of New England” recipient by the editors of Yankee magazine. Built in 1765 by the great grandson of one of the founders of Haddam, the interior gives off the appearance of a sophisticated home of the 1930s with stunning lines and generous rooms. In 1932 famous novelist Katharine Brush purchased the property and moved the house 400 feet back off the road. While she lived here Brush also added the guest house, naming it “Laurel Cottage” and using it as a writers’ retreat. That guest cottage sits atop a promontory overlooking the Connecticut River and Haddam Meadows State Park. In 2010, the main house underwent an extensive renovation and a two-bedroom carriage house was built on the property in 2015, adding more potential room for guests.

107 Kent Cornwall Road – Kent, Conn.
One of the greatest antique homes in Litchfield County is home to The Inn at Kent Falls, which was named the best bed and breakfast in the Nutmeg State in 2017 by The Daily Meal. Originally called the “Flanders Arms Inn,” The Inn at Kent Falls was built in 1741 in the Flanders historic district of town. The original house underwent a complete restoration in 2002, but the authentic charm and details have endured. The property consists of a main house, guest house, pool, pool house, as well as rich gardens and lawns. The Inn at Kent Falls features four luxurious suites and several beautifully appointed queen-sized rooms. On the main level of the home is the beamed living room with a fireplace that opens up to a dining room and kitchen. One of the more popular renovations was converting one of the upstairs bedrooms into a bathroom. Now all of the guest rooms have private baths and some even include candlelit fireplaces. In 2010 a 1,370-square foot guest house was also added that features a two-story foyer with a bench and coat rack. There’s also a living room with a fireplace, built-in bookshelves, kitchen, screened-in porch with blue stone floors and powder room on the main level. The upstairs bedroom enjoys a wall of windows that overlooks the brook and the yard, while the bathroom contains a six-foot soaking tub and a separate shower. The pool was also renovated with new systems and the filter was replaced in 2012, adding even more luxury and charm to one of Litchfield County’s most storied homes.
