As the calendar flips from December to January, there are plenty of events and activities to take part in to begin the New Year. Below are just a few to keep an eye out for as you welcome 2018.
Westchester
Farmer’s markets are not just for the summer and fall anymore. Come shop for locally grown and made foods indoors at the Mamaroneck Winter Farmers Market, located in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church annex. Each Saturday from January to April you will find farmers and food makers from the Larchmont and Rye Farmers Markets with locally grown fruits and vegetables, local meats, seafood, pantry items and prepared foods. Fairfield County
On January 7th from 2-3:30 p.m. the New Canaan Library will present a screening of Bag It (2010), a documentary that invites viewers to help reduce the plastic used in their communities. This program is presented in partnership with Planet New Canaan, a local environmental organization that focuses on encouraging reusable bag use. This thoughtful and often funny film documents one man’s earnest quest to reduce the plastic in his life, and targets the harmful chemicals and other environmental side effects of an over abundance of plastic in everyone’s lives. After the film, Aaron Lefland, Director of New Canaan Land Trust, and Chris Hendershot, Education Outreach Coordinator of New Canaan Nature Center, will lead a discussion about the impact of plastic pollution on the local environment. Litchfield County
Ring in the New Year with a hike. On January 1st from 6-9 p.m., the Sportsmen’s group of Bantam will host a full moon, snowshoe hike of the Apple Hill Trail Head in Morris, Conn. The hike meanders subtly up Apple Hill, where you can catch a beautiful view of Bantam Lake and the surrounding hills under forecasted super moon conditions. The hike is great for veteran snowshoe enthusiasts and for beginners. Following the hike the group will enjoy a cozy camp fire as well as snacks and libations. For more information, click here.
The Connecticut Shoreline
Whether you’re a wine connoisseur, food enthusiast or simply looking for an exciting weekend, you’ll find it all at the Sun Wine & Food Festival. On January 26th at Mohegan Sun, the Sun Wine & Food Fest kicks off with its signature showcases including the Grand Tasting and Celebrity Chef Dine Around. Sip and sample your way through a jam-packed lineup including the return of Sunday Brunch with Martha Stewart and the addition of Divine Delights, a sweet pairing of decadent treats and dessert wines. The Berkshires
January is the peak of ski season in New England and Berkshire County in Massachusetts has some of the best ski areas in the country. Friday, January 5 was declared “Learn to Ski or Ride Day” in the Bay State. Butternut Ski Resort in Great Barrington will be offering discounts for first time skiers and snowboarders. Located on Warner Mountain, Butternut features 22 trails ranging in difficulty, 11 ski lifts and two terrain parks.
