This week may have been more summer-like than fall, but before we know it the crisp temperatures will return, and it will start to feel like autumn once again. Fall is a favorite season for many with its vibrant foliage and backyard football games, and just about anything you can imagine is flavored with pumpkin spice. Fall also means it’s time to redecorate your home. There are plenty of options to get your entire property ready for the season. We’ve gathered a few tips to share that should help you make a statement this fall.
Cook up some Fall Colors
Most people will reserve the summer months to take on any home renovation projects, but the fall should not be overlooked as a season to work on your house. When you want to have a warm and cozy night at home, a rich palette of colors will help add to that ambiance. Houzz took at look at some colors for the kitchen that work in all four seasons. An orange or tangerine accent wall will help spice up any kitchen as will a gold or harvest wheat color. In addition to a fresh coat of paint, it’s also a good time to make sure your kitchen is prepared for the holiday season. Nobody wants to be re-facing cabinets the week of Thanksgiving, so Today’s Homeowner recommends taking care of these projects now. After all the work is done, sit down in your kitchen and enjoy a pumpkin spiced latte, you deserve it.
Get Crafty
So maybe you’re not a fan of the cool temperatures and you retreat inside before the first leaves fall off the trees. If you’re looking to spend some time inside this fall you can step up your seasonal decorations with a DIY project. Interior design website Home Edit shared some ideas to get started, including a project that brings the great outdoors inside. Simply take a stem with fall leaves and place them in a skinny vase or beaker. After you trim each stem accordingly make a couple for a deconstructed fall leaf bouquet.
Light it up!
Some of the best memories of family and friends can be moments shared gathering around a fireplace. While it may be a month or so before we can light a fire, it’s a good time to make sure your fireplace is in working order. Once it’s been properly cleaned and inspected, home building site Lennar says a lit fireplace can be inviting for guests this season. You can add to its charm by decorating the mantel with seasonal décor, such as pumpkins or a fall garland. In addition to the fireplace, you can light up autumn-themed decorative and scented candles. The soft and warm glow of candles adds to the charm and comfort a room may already possess. You can also hollow out small pumpkins, gourds or blocks of wood to make unique candleholders to further enhance the mood.
Create a book nook
The fall is the perfect time to curl up with a glass of wine and a good book. Sometimes there is unused space in homes near hallways, stairs or a landing. This space has the perfect potential to become a book nook that can transform a room to a comfortable place to unwind. Realtor.com explains that placement of your new reading space is key and if your budget allows, spring for custom built-ins that give you storage for your library of books. Natural light can also be used to your advantage, but for a more whimsical touch, string up twinkle lights you might be storing away for the Christmas season.
Flower Power
Flowers are not just for the spring and summer. While they are only in season for a short time, mums can help brighten up any porch, patio or front doorstep. Buffalo News suggests paying close attention to the color of the plant when decorating your property. Pots of mums in the same color shade make a strong statement. Also, a cluster of potted mums in a selection of warm colors paired with pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns later in October can help create the same effect. If you’re feeling adventurous this season, mums can also be combined with a scarecrow and other fall accents in a rustic wheelbarrow or wagon to make your home standout from others on the block.
