William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty Sets Record Price in Salisbury, Conn. in Sale of Scoville Mansion

Salisbury, Conn. (April 4, 2017) — William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty today announced the record sale of the 100-acre Salisbury, Conn. estate of nuclear arms control activist Herbert Scoville Jr., the highest sale in Salisbury in ten years. The French Norman-style manor, listed and sold by Kent agent Ira Goldspiel of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty, hit the market for the first time ever this past summer after remaining in the same family for over 150 years. It sold on April 3, 2017 for $5,840,000, which marks the highest sale in Litchfield County year to date.

Scoville helped to develop nuclear weapons in the late 1940s with the Defense Department’s Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, but eventually became an activist for nuclear arms control. In working for the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in the 1960s, he played instrumental roles in the 1963 Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the Soviet Union and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. In 1979, he helped found and became president of the Arms Control Association, and was a very high-profile public figure in the discussion of nuclear disarmament and how nuclear stability can exist between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

Built in 1927 by architect Joseph D. Leland, the home offers several modern updates while preserving the majority of its original details and fixtures, many of which were imported from Europe. Standout spaces include the dining room with fireplace and 18th-century English paneling, fully equipped chef’s kitchen with three pantries, living room with fireplace and natural wood ceiling, library with English paneling and fireplace, grand terrace, and unique spaces specific to the era it was built—ladies’ and mens’ rooms, coat rooms and a flower-arranging room. Situated on 100 acres with uninterrupted mountain views, the 13,000+/- square-foot home has 12 bedrooms including two master suites and seven full and three half-baths. The grounds have gardens dating back to the early 20th century, a recently added heated pool and extensive lawns ideal for lawn sports. There are also woods, ponds and walking trails, one leading to an 1890 stone and brick water tower with an 80-foot staircase up to an aerie with 360-degree views.

“It was an honor to represent such a valued piece of history in Litchfield County,” said Goldspiel.  “Its quality, grandeur and sweeping views are simply incomparable. Everything about the home is spectacular, and we wish its new owners nothing but the best.”
