Residential Roundup: Built From Brick

By Megan Montemarano

New Canaan, Connecticut—home of the great Philip Johnson’s historic Glass House. While many often associate the highly sought-after Fairfield County town with this beloved, modern masterpiece and other iconic mid-century modern properties, the architect’s adjacently built “Brick House” is also worth noting. This structure, built in 1949, served as a guest house on the famed property, and is one example of several sturdy, brick estates that proudly dress New Canaan’s coveted neighborhood streets.

The acclaimed Waveny House is perhaps one of the earliest brick buildings, constructed in 1912 for American entrepreneur Lewis Lapham and his family. The town of New Canaan eventually purchased this majestic mansion, which overlooks 300 acres of sweeping land, to create Waveny Park. The house now serves as a recreation and community center for local residents. “Brick was available long before these great houses were built, as it was used in chimneys,” comments Leslie Razook, a New Canaan agent who represents a stunning brick manor house for sale, located at 360 Greenley Road. However, according to Janet Lindstrom of the New Canaan Historical Society, brick houses like the Waveny Estate did not commonly start appearing until the 1920s and 30s. “The evolution of brick in our downtown area happened slowly, but it is a predominant feature of the village today, adding greatly to its matchless charm.”

910 Smith Ridge Road—$3,950,000

Everything about this custom-built brick manor estate is impressive. From its over four acres of land to its superior craftsmanship, millwork, easy flow and top-notch amenities, the residence unquestionably makes a statement. “It was custom-built by the previous owners, so it was never a spec house,” New Canaan agent Becky Walsh says of the 2003-built home. “One thing that people always comment on is how solidly built the residence is. I think some of that has to do with the fact that it is constructed of brick, which encompasses an endurance that lasts through the ages.” Numerous outdoor amenities have been added by the current owners including a heated pool, as well as a stone, open-air pavilion with a fireplace and outdoor kitchen ideal for entertaining in every season. The residence also boasts a game room, two large bonus rooms, a wine cellar and home theater.
