Deep River, Conn. – December 20, 2016 – William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty announced today that the firm has listed a rare waterfront property on the Connecticut River, previously owned by Admiral Irwin Chase Jr., a decorated WWII commander awarded the Silver Star for valor. The eight-acre site, which qualifies for up to four luxury lots, is located in Deep River, Conn., and listed with Essex agent Tim Boyd for $1,495,000.
Admiral Chase served in the Pacific theater during WWII under Admiral Halsey. He was present on the USS Missouri, alongside Admiral Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur, during the signing of the Japanese surrender. Chase eventually was promoted to Rear Admiral for his service.
Admiral Chase married into the Reynolds family, who had been the owners of 189 River Road since 1910. Chase and his wife, Winifred, eventually inherited the estate, which currently encompasses four structures on its eight acres: the main house, boat house with launch and stone-lined bulkhead ideal for a potential dock site, a summer house and two-story, three-car garage. The grounds additionally offer a private setting with 585 feet of elevated, underdeveloped waterfront land, featuring sweeping views of the Connecticut River. A deep-wooded drive enhances the extreme privacy of the residence, which opens to spacious, elevated meadows on all sides.
“It is extremely rare to have such a large parcel of land for sale in this section of Deep River, which includes some of the area’s most highly valued properties,” said Boyd. “From its westerly facing sunsets and scenic views, to its main house and other existing structures, which perfectly serve as the footprints for a thoughtful redevelopment, the land’s potential is immeasurable.”
The zoning in the River Road section of Deep River, Conn., is a two-acre minimum. Although the eight-acre parcel has never been subdivided, the property qualifies for a free split with as many as four lots. Set just offshore is the 26-acre Eustasia Island, marking the entrance to the Deep River harbor. This land is also owned by the Chase family, and can be included with the purchase of the property.
