The upcoming change of season presents the opportunity for a fresh take on your home décor. From adding bold accents and new textures to incorporating crisp elements from nature with minimal fuss, here’s what’s trending this fall, according to our very own experts.
Bold, Bling and Brassy
Love daring home features and accents that make a statement? Then this fall season, you’re in luck! A Westport agent and expert house flipper with an eye for design, Susan Vanech says it’s okay to choose styles that are extra dramatic. “Brace yourself this fall for bold, bling and brassy balanced by a twist of textures,” explains Vanech. “It’s the return to the glam of a golden era with aged, rubbed or raw brass baubles, lighting and accent pieces.” Domino Magazine agrees, highlighting the seasonal popularity of using heavy metals throughout a residence, especially copper, which the publication describes as “the metal of the moment.” Simple additions such as new metal finishes, decorative bowls and even wall décor can instantly make a room vibrant, just like the season!
Texture
Texture provides a room with feeling—a tangible décor choice that effortlessly adds warmth to any home. “Using glass or lucite against rich textiles of velvet, feathers and fur in deep jewel tones is a wonderful way to embrace the tone of the season,” adds Vanech. “Tease the senses with texture in unexpected places like ceilings or shelving nooks, or as a backdrop in a bathroom behind a free standing tub.”
Changing Colors
A simple burst of color to reflect the changing leaves outside has the power to create a cozy fall atmosphere in your home. “For a pop of autumn color in an otherwise neutral interior, create orange or russet accents with seasonal pillows or a throw on the sofa,” advises Gladys Montgomery, an agent from our Great Barrington office, who has the pleasure of witnessing the stunning fall foliage of the Berkshires each season. “Use an orange pumpkin or bowl of colorful gourds and some bright fall leaves as a centerpiece on a table, and put a bowl of fresh-picked apples on a kitchen island.”
Work within a Neutral Palette
Autumn is a time of great appreciation for the transforming natural beauty that surrounds. It is therefore essential to embrace the season by welcoming these lively elements of nature inside. From pressed leaves to cinnamon scents, pumpkins, wreathes, and even small, carefully arranged branches from the backyard, there are countless ways to display the rich harvest of the season throughout a residence. “Introduce seasonal updates with a minimum of fuss into the sophisticated neutral interiors that are still the dominant trend in interior decoration,” explains Montgomery. “To work within a neutral palette, white pumpkins and gourds are an unexpected and very sophisticated seasonal addition to a white, beige or gray room.”
