2018: Home Trends and Styles to Take Note of in the New Year

By Tyler R. Morrissey

A New Year brings upon many changes and we’re not talking about New Year’s resolutions. With each coming year tastes and trends change. Today we want to sum up what some experts in the industry are saying about what to expect in 2018.

A Quick Recap

Before we dive into what’s going to change in 2018, let’s take a look back at some home trends we saw this past year. Zillow highlighted four housing trends we saw in 2017 including the return of mid-century modern homes. According to the real estate website, interest in mid-century modern homes such as this listing in New Canaan peaked in May and October. A star of New Canaan’s mid-century modernism, well-known architect John Black Lee designed this home at 729 Laurel Road in the early 1950s. Its unique features lend itself to natural light and direct views of the moss-covered rocky site on over three acres. Constructed as a white box on stilts, the 1,500-square-foot residence features an International Style design that incorporates walls of glass and sliding glass doors, a flowing floor plan, white, minimalist interiors, and small square skylights.

Paint the Town

Every year since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute selects a color as its color of the year. The Pantone Color Institute is a consulting service within Pantone that forecasts global color trends and advises companies on color in brand identity and product development, for the application and integration of color as a strategic asset. The much anticipated color of the year was recently announced with PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet taking home the honors. According to Pantone, “Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

While Ultra Violet is the color of the year, it might not work with everyone’s color scheme. Houzz made a few suggestions for those looking to add some color to their home in 2018. Oceanside from Sherwin-Williams is a rich blue-green color that can work in a variety of rooms. Black Flame from PPG Paints is a navy-black hue that can also make a room stand out.

Keeping an Eye on the Market

Anybody that follows real estate closely knows the market is always changing. While there are many factors that determine what happens in the market, industry leaders are already making their predictions for what to look out for in 2018. Realtor Magazine cites a Realtor.com story that shows millennial home buyers could gain a significant market share. Millennials may reach 43 percent of home buyers taking out a mortgage by the end of 2018, up from an estimated 40 percent in 2017. The largest cohort of millennials are expected to turn 30 in 2020, meaning this percentage will only increase as time goes on.

Trends to Ditch

As with any new year, some interior design trends fall out of style. Realtor.com recently compiled a list of design trends that you may want to say goodbye to in 2018. One of these trends is the use of cement tiles in your home. While they look great, you may not get the longevity out of the tiles that you are looking for, as cement is subject to cracking. Another trend Realtor.com recommends ditching in the New Year is tropical patterns and chevron patterns on the wall. While palm trees and flamingos may give you the feeling of a year-round vacation, they are really only appealing during one or two seasons. Other trends that may disappear in 2018 are overstated range hoods in the kitchen and Tuscan-style throughout the entire home.

In With the New

While there are trends to bid farewell to next year, these are some new styles you may notice in 2018. According to the Huffington Post, rose gold saw a huge surge in popularity from our phones and computers to our homes, but this may change. They predict copper accents can provide a classier finish and may de-throne rose gold as the preferred metal finish. Do you hate making your bed every day? You may be in luck this year as the Japanese concept of “wabi sabi” is set to make a big debut in 2018. Wabi sabi celebrates imperfection and brings a sense of authenticity and honesty to a home’s design. Time will tell if these trends will take over as the New Year is still a page of a story that’s yet to be written.
